Playland
The last night of 1989 on the edge of a Karoo town, where a shabby travelling fairground has set up in the dust and its black night watchman keeps the gate. A white ex-conscript, drunk and in no hurry to go home, will not leave the fence, and the two work round to what each has done and who may call it finished. Written between Mandela's release and the first election, and Fugard's most direct on whether a reckoning can be made person to person.
