The Road to Mecca
In a Karoo village in 1974 an elderly widow has filled her rooms with candles and mirrors and her yard with cement owls and camels turned to face east, and the pastor has arrived with a form for the old-age home and a pen. A young teacher drives up from Cape Town in answer to a letter that alarmed her. Drawn from Helen Martins of Nieu-Bethesda, whose Owl House still stands, and given the New York Drama Critics' Circle award for best foreign work.
