Mao II
A novelist who has spent twenty-three years not finishing a book, and longer than that not being seen, lets a photographer into the house and finds that having an image again changes what he can do. An editor draws him toward Beirut, where a young poet is being held by a group that has learned to make meaning the way writers once did. The argument — that the terrorist now holds the ground the novelist used to hold — won the PEN/Faulkner and has been read as prophecy since.
