Torquato Tasso

Goethe · 1790 CE · Play · German · Romantic

At the court of Ferrara a poet hands over the epic he has spent years on and is crowned with laurel by the duke's sister, whose favour he cannot tell apart from love. The secretary of state returns from Rome and measures the poet's work against the business of governing, after which suspicion turns him against everyone who has protected him. Goethe wrote a court artist's breakdown from inside his own Weimar service.
