Götz von Berlichingen
A Swabian knight with an iron hand in place of the one he lost at Landshut holds his fief by raid and private feud while the Emperor's new courts move to abolish exactly that right. His boyhood friend Weislingen goes over to the bishop's court and to the woman waiting there, and the peasant rising that follows offers Götz a command he cannot control. Goethe wrote it at twenty-three out of the knight's own memoir, in prose that discarded the French rules outright, and the Sturm und Drang begins here.
