William Tell

Friedrich Schiller · 1804 CE · Play · German · Romantic

A huntsman rows a hunted man across the storm on the lake at Lucerne while the Austrian governor's horsemen search the shore behind them. On the meadow at Rütli the men of three forest cantons swear by night to be one people, and in the square at Altdorf a hat is set on a pole with orders that every passer-by bow to it. Schiller's last completed work, by a man who never saw Switzerland.
