Ode to Joy
Joy is addressed as a daughter of Elysium under whose gentle wing all men become brothers, across stanzas that each break into a chorus: the beggar made the prince's equal, enemies forgiven, millions embraced at once. Schiller wrote it for a Dresden circle of friends after a wretched year, in the drinking-song form of the day, and later thought little of it. Beethoven set the revised text as the finale of his Ninth Symphony.
