I, Too

Sent to eat in the kitchen when company comes, the darker brother laughs, and eats well, and grows strong, and says plainly where he intends to be sitting tomorrow. It is short enough to be a placard and is built on a single reversal of who is at the table. Hughes wrote it against Whitman's catalogue of Americans singing at their trades, supplying the voice that catalogue had left out.
