Theme for English B

Langston Hughes · 1951 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

The instructor tells the class to go home and let the page come out of them, and the student who writes it is twenty-two, colored, born in Winston-Salem, the only one of his color in the class, and lives at the Harlem Branch Y up the hill from the college on the hill above Harlem. He likes to eat, sleep, drink and be in love, likes to work, read, learn and understand life, likes a pipe for a Christmas present, or records — Bessie, bop, or Bach. Whether what comes out of him will therefore be colored, and what teacher and student are in each other, is put as flatly as the assignment was.
