Mulatto
Colonel Thomas Norwood keeps a Georgia plantation, a Black housekeeper who has borne him five children, and a son back from school in the North who will not use the back door or answer to the name the county gives him. The mother holds to her belief that the Colonel will acknowledge the boy, the boy holds to the front door, and the white townsmen hold to the road outside. It ran a year on Broadway over a rape scene the producer added and Hughes fought and lost, and held the record for the longest Broadway run of a play by a Black author for over twenty years.
