The Father

August Strindberg · 1887 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A cavalry captain and amateur scientist wants his daughter sent away to town to be raised a freethinker; his wife wants her kept at home, and drops the suggestion that he cannot possibly know the child is his. She works patiently on the regimental doctor, the pastor and the old nurse until every certainty the captain states is filed as a symptom. Strindberg sent the manuscript to Zola and offered it as naturalist tragedy stripped to three acts, the experiment he refined the following year.
