Two French aristocrats and former lovers set each other tasks: the Vicomte de Valmont is to seduce a famously devout married woman, the Marquise de Merteuil to arrange the ruin of a girl fresh out of the convent. Everything is done by letter, and the letters keep score. Seduction as warfare between two brilliant cynics, until the game draws real blood.
