Quicksand

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki · 1930 CE · Novel · Japanese · Modernist

A lawyer's wife in Osaka, bored and enrolled in an art class, tells a listening novelist how she came to paint a Kannon with the face of a younger student named Mitsuko, and how the rumour that the two were lovers arrived before the fact did. Blood oaths, forged letters and a sleeping draught draw the husband in as well. Narrated end to end in Osaka speech by a woman plainly editing as she goes.
