The Bridge of Dreams
Tadasu grows up in an old Kyoto villa with a garden pond, a spring that runs cold all summer, and a mother still nursing him at an age when she should not be; when she dies his father marries a second woman and gives her the first one's name and manner. The boy is told to call her mother. Named for the last chapter of the Genji, which Tanizaki put into modern Japanese three times.
