Naomi

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki · 1924 CE · Novel · Japanese · Modernist

A salaried engineer of twenty-eight takes a fifteen-year-old café waitress out of Asakusa, installs her in a Western-style house he calls the fairy castle, and sets about making her a modern woman with English lessons, dancing lessons and a bath he draws himself. She learns faster than he budgeted for. A newspaper stopped the serial in outrage; the vogue it named, Naomi-ism, outlasted the scandal.
