Red Rose, White Rose

Eileen Chang · 1944 CE · Short Story · Chinese · Modernist

Zhenbao, a textile engineer trained in Edinburgh and admired all over Shanghai for having built himself out of nothing, holds that a man is entitled to two women, a passionate one and a respectable one, and believes he has arranged both correctly. The married woman whose flat he lodges in and the pale bride his mother selects decline to stay in the positions he has assigned them. Chang's coolest anatomy of a self-made man's self-regard, and its opening lines about red roses and white have been quoted in Chinese ever since.
