Love in a Fallen City

Eileen Chang · 1943 CE · Short Story · Chinese · Modernist

Bai Liusu, divorced and living back in the Shanghai family house where her brothers have spent her settlement and her mother counsels patience, goes to Hong Kong on a matchmaking trip that had been arranged for her younger sister. Fan Liuyuan, an overseas Chinese with money and no intention of marrying anyone, runs the courtship as a long negotiation about which of them will concede first, and then the shelling starts over Repulse Bay. Chang was twenty-three, and the novella made her the most discussed writer in occupied Shanghai.
