Iaiá Garcia

Machado de Assis · 1878 CE · Novel · Latin American · Victorian

A widower packs his son off to the Paraguayan war to break an attachment to a poor young woman, who is then married to the father instead, and a girl in the house watches the whole arrangement being made. Grown, she sets about rearranging it, and every party manoeuvres while claiming to be resigned. The last of the early Rio romances before Machado's break with his own manner.
