Resurrection (Machado de Assis)

Machado de Assis · 1872 CE · Novel · Latin American · Victorian

A wealthy Rio physician who has trained himself to distrust every feeling meets a young widow, lets himself be engaged, and then assembles out of gossip, anonymous letters and his own suspicion the case for her unfaithfulness. Her brother helps the suspicion along without meaning to. Machado's first, and already a study of jealousy as a self-inflicted wound.
