The Newton Letter

John Banville · 1982 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A historian takes a lodge on a decaying Irish estate for the summer to finish a life of Newton, and spends it instead watching the family in the big house and building an account of them that suits him. His own book stalls on Newton's letter of 1693 renouncing the whole business of understanding, while the household — Charlotte, Edward, Ottilie — arranges itself into a pattern he has read before without noticing. Third of the Revolutions sequence, and the shortest of them.
