A wealthy couple remaking the grounds of their estate invite two people to stay: his old friend the Captain, and her niece Ottilie, just out of boarding school. Over a chapter of chemistry the four agree that certain substances, brought together, abandon their partners for new ones, and the household then arranges itself accordingly. Goethe's coldest book, and the one that put natural law where a novel of adultery had kept sin.
