Tristana
Orphaned and taken in by Don Lope, a courtly old seducer who has made her his ward and his mistress, Tristana begins teaching herself languages and painting and imagining a life she might actually choose. A young painter meets her on her walks, and the affair runs largely through letters that grow more inventive as her freedom narrows. Galdós wrote it fast and at full power, straight into the Spanish argument about what a woman might be permitted to become.
