Summer

Edith Wharton · 1917 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Charity Royall, brought down as a child from the squatter settlement on the Mountain and raised by the village lawyer who is now her guardian, keeps the library in a dead New England town and hates every week of it. A young architect comes to sketch the old houses, and the summer turns into something she has neither vocabulary nor protection for. Wharton called it the hot Ethan: the same starved Berkshire country as her winter tragedy, with the season and the sexual frankness reversed.
