The House of Mirth
Lily Bart, twenty-nine and beautiful with no money of her own, works New York's drawing rooms and country weekends trying to turn admiration into a suitable marriage before her looks and her credit give out. Bridge debts, a speculative favor from a friend's husband, and a packet of another woman's letters leave her at the mercy of people who need someone to blame. Wharton's anatomy of old New York turns the marriage plot into an account of how a leisure class disposes of its women.
