The Beautiful and Damned

F. Scott Fitzgerald · 1922 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Anthony Patch, Harvard-educated and waiting on his grandfather's fortune, marries Gloria Gilbert, and the two settle into a rented life of parties, taxis and gray houses taken for the summer. The old man's money stays out of reach, the war sends Anthony to a training camp in the South, and the drinking stops being an amusement. Written straight out of the Fitzgeralds' first married years, it rehearses at length the ruin that The Great Gatsby would compress into a single summer.
