A Streetcar Named Desire
Blanche DuBois arrives at her sister's two rooms in the French Quarter with a trunk of costume jewelry, the family place gone and her teaching post left behind under circumstances she keeps rearranging in the telling. Stanley Kowalski wants an accounting of the lost property, tears the paper lantern off the naked bulb she cannot bear, and waits her out through a wet New Orleans summer. Kazan restaged his own Broadway production with the same cast but for Vivien Leigh, and lost minutes to the censors that were only restored four decades on.
