Half a Lifelong Romance

Eileen Chang · 1950 CE · Novel · Chinese · Modernist

Shen Shijun, a young engineer from a Nanjing family, and Gu Manzhen, who works in the same Shanghai factory office and keeps her whole household on the salary, court each other slowly and with every intention of marrying. Manzhen's elder sister, who had paid for that household by dancing at a cabaret and has since married the man who kept her, finds a use for the younger one that neither of them sees coming. Chang serialised it in a Shanghai paper under a pen name in 1950 and rewrote it in Hong Kong eighteen years later under the title it now carries.
