Thunderstorm

Cao Yu · 1934 CE · Play · Chinese · Modernist

Through one sweltering day in a Tianjin mansion, the mine owner Zhou Puyuan holds his household to a regimen of medicine and silence: his student son courts the maid Sifeng, his elder son is trying to end an affair with his stepmother, and a strike leader up from the family colliery is waiting at the door. The barometer falls across four acts, old employment records come out of a drawer, and a woman who served in the house thirty years earlier arrives to take her daughter home. Written by Cao Yu at twenty-three, it made spoken drama a Chinese form and has not left the repertory since.
