Desire Under the Elms
Ephraim Cabot, seventy-five and hard as the stones he cleared, comes back to his New England farm with a third wife young enough to be his son's age, and his two elder sons sell their claim on the place and leave for the California gold fields. Eben, the youngest, holds that the farm was his dead mother's and is therefore his, and the new wife holds that it will be hers the moment she gives the old man another heir. Two enormous elms hang over the roof, and the parlour where the mother was laid out has been kept shut since.
