Strange Interlude

Eugene O'Neill · 1928 CE · Play · Modern / American · Modernist

Nina Leeds loses her fiancé in the last weeks of the war before she has slept with him, and spends the twenty-five years after arranging the men around her — a novelist who loves her, a doctor who fathers her child, a husband whose family carries madness, and in time the son — into the life she was denied. Nine acts run from late afternoon to nearly midnight with the audience sent out for dinner in the middle. Every character speaks a second line aloud as unheard thought, so that what is said and what is meant run in parallel for five hours.
