Long Day's Journey into Night

Eugene O'Neill · 1956 CE · Play · Modern / American · Contemporary

Across one August day in 1912 the Tyrones sit in their Connecticut summer house while the fog comes in from the sound: a famous actor turned miser, his two grown sons, and a mother lately home from a cure. The younger son's cough is being called a summer cold by everyone who knows it is not, and by evening the family's accounting of who ruined whom is fully open. O'Neill wrote it in 1941 and ordered it withheld for twenty-five years after his death; his widow released it three years on, and American domestic tragedy has been measured against it since.
