Eugene O'Neill · 1920 CE · Play · Modern / American · Modernist

Two brothers on a failing New England farm: Robert reads books, is not strong, and sails with his uncle's ship in the morning for three years abroad, while Andrew works the land and is the one who should stay on it. On the evening before the sailing the girl both of them want says which one she loves, and the brothers exchange lives on the spot. O'Neill's first full-length play on Broadway and his first Pulitzer, and the production that persuaded American critics the commercial theatre could carry tragedy.
