The Iceman Cometh

Eugene O'Neill · 1946 CE · Play · Modern / American · Contemporary

In the back room of a downtown New York saloon in the summer of 1912, a dozen men who have not been outside in years drink on credit and keep their pipe dreams in good repair: an anarchist, a Boer commandant and a British captain who fought each other, a disgraced police lieutenant, a circus man, the bartender's girls. All of them are waiting on Hickey, the hardware drummer who turns up twice a year, buys the house and works the old joke about his wife and the iceman. He arrives sober, off the drink for good, announcing that he has come this time to bring every one of them peace by taking their dreams away.
