The Hairy Ape

Eugene O'Neill · 1922 CE · Play · Modern / American · Modernist

Yank stokes the furnaces of a transatlantic liner, is the strongest man in the forecastle, and is certain that he belongs to the engines and that the engines are what move the world. A steel magnate's daughter comes down to look at the stokehole in a white dress, sees him at the furnace door and calls him a filthy beast, and he goes ashore to find out who is responsible for her. Eight expressionist scenes take him up Fifth Avenue, into a jail and a union hall, and finally to the one place in New York he is told he might fit.
