Woyzeck
A garrison barber shaves his captain, eats the peas a doctor pays him to live on, and hires himself out at every spare hour to keep a woman and the child they were not married to have. Voices come up out of the ground at him while a drum major walks his Marie past the fairground booths. Left in fragments when Büchner died at twenty-three, drawn from the court record of a real killing, and unstaged for eighty years: it put a poor man at the centre of tragedy and broke the play into scenes that can be shuffled.
