Lenz
On the twentieth of January the poet Jakob Lenz walks over the mountains into a Vosges village, where a pastor takes him in and watches him try to hold himself together by way of sermons, cold water and long nights outdoors. The prose stays inside his sensations as they slip — the sky pressing down, the conviction that he could feel something if he only shouted loud enough. Büchner worked from Pastor Oberlin's diary of the real visit and invented out of it the interior that modern fiction has used ever since.
