Eleven stories out of a Wyoming of foreclosed ranches, rodeo circuits and wind that never lets up: a bull rider who cannot quit the circuit, an old man driving back across country to a funeral with a story about a skinned steer riding alongside him, two hands hired to watch sheep on a mountain in the summer of 1963. Proulx worked from county archives, brand books and back files of local newspapers, and compressed the prose almost to dialect. The last of the three, 'Brokeback Mountain', had already taken an O. Henry Award and became the best-known thing she wrote.
