The Encantadas

Herman Melville · 1854 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Victorian

Ten sketches of a scorched volcanic archipelago on the equator where nothing runs and nothing sings, and the tortoises carry their black shells over the cinders as though under sentence. Among the pieces are a Chola widow left three years alone on Norfolk Isle after her husband's boat goes over, and a renegade who makes himself sole tyrant of Hood's Isle with a blunderbuss and four captives. Melville had seen the Galapagos from a whaler in 1841 and headed each sketch with lines lifted from Spenser.
