Nanook of the North

Robert J. Flaherty · 1922 CE · Film · Inuit · Modernist

An Inuit hunter and his family work a year of the Ungava coast: spearing walrus on the floe, trading fox pelts at the post, cutting an ice window into a snow house before the light goes. Flaherty staged much of it, asking his subjects to use harpoons where rifles were already ordinary and building the igloo interior as an open half-dome so he could shoot inside it. The founding feature of documentary, and the founding case of its central ethical problem.
