Growth of the Soil
A man with a sack on his back walks north out of the settled country, finds a slope with water and timber, and begins to cut; a woman with a harelip arrives to keep the goats and stays. Fields are broken one at a time across decades while a telegraph line, a copper strike, a sheriff and a court arrive to complicate what began with two people and a spade. The Nobel citation of 1920 named it directly, and its reception has been inseparable ever since from what its author did in the war that came after.
