Mysteries
A stranger in a loud yellow suit steps off the steamer into a small Norwegian coastal town carrying a violin case with no violin in it, and stays on for no reason he will give. Over one summer he demolishes the town's opinions of Tolstoy and Gladstone in public, keeps company with a bullied cripple everyone calls the Midget, and lays siege to the parson's daughter with proposals that contradict each other. Hamsun's most direct attempt at the fiction his lectures had demanded — a mind given in its inconsistencies rather than a character fixed to a social type.
