Confessions of Felix Krull

Thomas Mann · 1954 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

The son of a bankrupt Rhineland sparkling-wine maker learns early that he can counterfeit anything, an illness, a signature, a social class, and talks his way from a Frankfurt hotel lift to a Paris dining room to a title not remotely his. He sets it down in the tone of a man dictating memoirs to a grateful public. Begun in 1911, put aside for forty years and left unfinished; a parody of Goethe's autobiography in which the artist's gift is fraud.
