Joseph and His Brothers

Thomas Mann · 1943 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

Four novels take the thirty chapters of Genesis about Jacob's favourite son and open out the whole world standing behind them: Babylonian myth, Egyptian bureaucracy, and the psychology of a boy who cannot stop telling people his dreams. Jacob's own courtships and deceptions fill the first volume before Joseph is even born. Mann worked at it for sixteen years, most of them in exile, and thought it his best.
