Doctor Faustus

Thomas Mann · 1947 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A mild classics teacher sits down in wartime Germany to write the life of his oldest friend, a composer of formidable coldness who deliberately contracted an illness he believed would sharpen him. The music grows more brilliant as the conduct grows stranger, and a conversation in an Italian village is transcribed in the old language of a bargain. Mann's account of what his country had done, set inside the legend that country tells about itself.
