The Holy Sinner

Thomas Mann · 1951 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A twin brother and sister of the ducal house of Flanders produce a son they cannot acknowledge, who is set adrift in a cask with a tablet explaining as much and raised by fishermen on a far island. Grown, knightly and ignorant, he sails off to find the parents the tablet half describes. Mann's late retelling of Hartmann von Aue's twelfth-century Gregorius, narrated by a puckish monk who keeps interrupting himself.
