To Damascus
A writer named only the Stranger meets a woman at a street corner and moves out through a sequence of scenes — an inn, a kitchen, a gorge, a convent, an asylum — which the second half then retraces in reverse order back to the same corner. Figures recur as doubles of one another, the settings answer his guilt instead of advancing a plot, and the road to Damascus supplies the pattern rather than the story. It is the first station drama, and European expressionist theatre starts here.
