A Dream Play
The daughter of the god Indra comes down into the world and passes through it — an officer waiting decades at a stage door with his bouquet, a lawyer's office papered with other people's misery, a schoolroom, a quarantine station, a bay where a castle grows out of the manure like a plant — repeating that human beings are to be pitied. Characters split, merge and change without explanation, one setting dissolves into the next, and a locked door that everyone believes hides the secret of the world waits at the centre of it. The preface claims for the play the disconnected but apparently logical form of a dream, and its stagecraft is the direct source of European expressionism and, later, of the absurd.
