The People of Hemsö

August Strindberg · 1887 CE · Novel · Nordic · Victorian

A quick-talking farmhand from the mainland is hired to put a slack island farm in the Stockholm archipelago back in order, and sets about the hayfields, the fishing, the summer lodgers, the widow who owns the place and her idle son. A year of work carries the book — haymaking, seal-hunting, a parson who cannot preach, a wedding, and the ice closing in. Strindberg wrote it in Bavaria as a holiday from his war plays, and it has stayed the best-loved of his books in Sweden.
