August Strindberg · 1889 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

At a seaside boarding house a sickly young painter is befriended by an older guest who, over one long conversation, takes apart his confidence in his pictures, in his health and in his wife, a novelist who has published a book about her first marriage. When she comes back from the steamer the older man moves into the next room and listens. Written as a one-acter for the Scandinavian Experimental Theatre, it is Strindberg's tightest study of what one mind can do to another by suggestion alone.
