The Ghost Sonata
An old man in a wheelchair points out to a young student the handsome apartment house across the street and the people inside it, then buys the boy his way in; meanwhile a dead consul walks past his own front door and a milkmaid stands at the fountain whom only some of them can see. Indoors, a woman who believes she is a parrot has spent forty years in a closet, a supper party sits in silence over what each guest knows about the others, and a girl tends hyacinths in a room of her own. The third of the chamber plays written for Strindberg's Intimate Theatre, it was jeered at first and became a founding text for expressionist and absurdist staging.
